The Further Adventures of Kimberlogic

Fri Jan 6

It has been a year since I drove to a shelter and met two tiny kittens, fell in love, filled out a lot of forms, payed a bunch of money and brought them home by nightfall.  They are now known as Sasha & Neko.  So happy kittenversary to all of us.  I haven’t written too much about them here over the past year.   They are just about 14 months old now.  And they are awesome.

Sasha is still fairly small but also very playful, soft and vocal.  Sometimes it really seems like she understands English.  She is still pretty skittish around unfamiliar people.  She will play with almost anything and is increasingly affectionate.  She got very attached to the blanket I had with me the day we met and spent her early months carrying it from place to place or using it as a “home-base” to return to after her very short forays around the house.  She’s a lot more comfortable exploring these days but she still loves that blanket.

Neko is long - long paws, long body, long ears.  He loves snuggling up against our heads & faces.  He likes to chew on pretty much everything.  He is fascinated by shiny things, water, bells - and he likes finding hidey-holes where he can stash treasure like toys, kibble, socks and such.  He has a very soft, almost chirp-like mew and he doesn’t use it very often.  He likes demonstrating that he can scale very tall bookshelves in 2-3 leaps and he loves to lay down on our warm bed right after we get up in the morning.

Their first few months were full of health worries, surgery and expensive-but-so-worth-it medical procedures, but thankfully they seem pretty healthy now.

I still miss Merlin often - and all the cats I’ve known & loved.  In the past year, we lost Marlowe and also two in-law cats that we adored - Tai Gau and Renki.  We didn’t set out to adopt a brother-sister pair but I’m glad we found these two.  They are very different than Merlin & Morgaine but also remind me of them in some ways.

I hadn’t had a kitten since I was a kid, so the kitten-energy (or really “kitten-chaos” given there are 2 of them) has sometimes been a bit surprising but every day I’m so glad they are here.  Thanks to everyone who contributed to the kitten fund during the 2010 holidays - they are two of the best gifts I’ve received in years!
